Rode 30 miles today. I’ve heard about bonking and today I’m pretty sure I did. At about 21 miles I had to get off the bike and sit down. I was nauseous and drained of energy. The funny thing is I had just told my riding partner how good I felt and literally 100 yards later everything changed. I drank some water and Gatorade and rested for about 15 minutes and got back on and continued even though I didn’t feel well. I kept drinking water and Gatorade and felt better the further I went. I did complete the ride but it was hell doing it. About 3 miles from the end my quads started cramping up. I did a lot of running this week and also dieting so I suspect I was already low on stored energy. I’m also sure I was not prepared with my hydration before starting. So lesson learned. I hope my anxiety about riding goes down before my next ride as right now I’m a little scared to be out on the road and have that happen again. For my next ride I’m going to bring my glucose meter and test every 10 miles and see if that was the issue. I’ll take Sunday as my rest day from now on so Monday’s will be my new pool day. The good news is that I’m 213.
