It was so cold this night.  30mph winds from the north and in the high 30's.  I planned on riding 24 but cut it short.  At one point I looked down and was doing 7mph into the wind on the flats.

Nice job on the 30mph. I love crusing down a hill at that speed. Quite exhilirating. So, I was looking at your saveafatty website. In 10 years it looks like you've aged 20 with all the weight gain. (I can say that because 4 years ago I was 254 lbs.) I've lost about 60 of those pounds, and I still have some weight to lose, but the point is, you can drop the weight no doubt. Just keep on doing what you're doing with the running and the biking. Good luck!

Save a fatty. lol. That still cracks me up.

I couldn't get out of bed this morning and missed my workout but as luck would have it I was able to get off work early and headed for the pool.  This is my longest swim to date!!  My goal distance from the beginning was 1800 yards and now I'm here!!  Will need to start working on getting my time down.  Total time was right at an hour so I'm a little over 1mph at this distance!!

Incredible ride today. You couldn’t ask for better weather. Wind was light from the north and the temps in the 40′s throughout. I ate a cup of cheerios prior and took a gu gel before we left. Had another half way through. I felt good throughout. We intended to do 15 and added distance to 21.

Eggroll,

Glad I didn't run with you guys...! I only ran 6.6 miles at a 7:10 pace.

Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles
2.000.0011.10

I did my brick workout today and learned a lot of great things. Today I rode my bike 11 miles and ran 2 miles.  Really not sure what is going on with my weight.  I've gained 3 pounds this week even though my workouts have picked up.  I know I've had a salt craving all week so I suspect it's all water.

The ride was uneventful. My chain derailed once on the front chainring moving from the small to the large. I had this happen once yesterday so I need to take a look at it. My pace was good and it was a nice easy ride in rolling hills.

Now the run. Today was my first time ever running off the treadmill. Up till now everything has been on the treadmill. My previous brick workouts were on the spinning bike and treadmill at the gym. So what did I learn? 1. Something is clearly wrong with my treadmill. Either I got faster running after 11 miles on the bike and taking it really easy on the run (I walked the first 400 and my pace “felt” like a 17:00 pace) or my treadmill is not accurate at all. The good thing is it is wrong to my advantage so I’ll keep using it’s numbers when I post and be happy when I run outside and am faster. 2. I could have easily gone another mile. Other than my legs feeling like bricks my cardio was fine. For at least a mile I was singing from my iPod even though my legs weren’t moving well. At about 1.5 miles my legs felt like running legs again and my pace picked up. 3. I’d forgotten how my I enjoyed running outside as a youth. It wasn’t work at all and was definitely a nice change of scenery. 4. I will most likely cry after my first triathlon. I was smiling so big the last 100 that I knew then the emotions will be too much that day.

So anyway sorry for the long post I’m just really excited.

OK something is definately changing in my body.  This last 7 days I've gained a pound every single day.  WTF?  That doesn't even make sense.  If anyone has any ideas please share in a comment below.  Strangly my scale has a body fat calculator on it which I rarely look at but I've noticed it is reading 4% lower than normal even though I'm heavier than I've been in a couple of months.  IDK, I'm at a loss.  Is it possible to retain 7 pounds of water all of a sudden?

Good swim today. Again I went out a little fast the first two laps then had to backstroke a lap to get my lungs back.  After that is was smooth sailing.

I really didn’t want to run tonight because today I went crazy on the food. What did I eat you ask? 3 links of dry sausage, 1 healthy choice meal for lunch, 1 ice cream cone on the way home after picking up Beef w/ Broccoli, 2 fried wontons, 1 egg roll for dinner. As luck would have it the girl scouts were by to peddle me a heart attack in a box so I bought 4 and ate about 10 cookies from two boxes. It’s about 10:40pm as I write this and I’m thinking another handful of cookies won’t hurt, but I’m too tired to go downstairs. The good news is I did run tonight and managed 5 miles.

2 mile run
1 mile walk
2 mile run

5 total miles 70:45 (5 minutes faster than last week!)

Almost forgot my weight is back down 214.8 this morning (8 pounds in a couple of days) I guess my body just needed to expand and contract.

Ok didn’t get to workout the last two days. I missed my swim Friday cause I couldn’t get moving in the morning and by the time I got to the gym they were closing. Saturday the weather looked bad and I couldn’t get with my partner so another day lost. However, I wasn’t going to let another day go by so today I headed out. I did things completely bass ackwards and started with my bike. I completed a little over 16 miles. It was a very nice ride. The temps were up in the mid 70′s today. I followed my ride up with a two mile run. Other than having to dodge kids and parents standing around on the track talking it was pretty uneventful. I managed to shave nearly 50 seconds off my mile pace from last week. Finally I did my swim. I now know why the swim is first. I suspect there would be a lot of drownings if the swim were last. I did 500 meters and it really wasn’t that bad. I forgot to check my time getting in and out so I don’t have those numbers. I treated myself to jacuzzi and sauna after and sat and enjoyed the quiet. Hi there, it is great seeing another Austinite on the blog.

Keep it up - 3 years ago I was 210 pounds and something like 25% body fat. Recently I have been as low as 162 during heavy training. There is another runner in our group who used to weigh 248 pounds. His goal was to run a 2:48 marathon so he could have a t-shirt that said from 248 to 2:48:00. He accomplished his goal yesterday at the Houston marathon.

Remember that all things are possible! Keep up the great work!

Rode 30 miles today. I’ve heard about bonking and today I’m pretty sure I did. At about 21 miles I had to get off the bike and sit down. I was nauseous and drained of energy. The funny thing is I had just told my riding partner how good I felt and literally 100 yards later everything changed. I drank some water and Gatorade and rested for about 15 minutes and got back on and continued even though I didn’t feel well. I kept drinking water and Gatorade and felt better the further I went. I did complete the ride but it was hell doing it. About 3 miles from the end my quads started cramping up. I did a lot of running this week and also dieting so I suspect I was already low on stored energy. I’m also sure I was not prepared with my hydration before starting. So lesson learned. I hope my anxiety about riding goes down before my next ride as right now I’m a little scared to be out on the road and have that happen again. For my next ride I’m going to bring my glucose meter and test every 10 miles and see if that was the issue. I’ll take Sunday as my rest day from now on so Monday’s will be my new pool day. The good news is that I’m 213.

I'm changing things up a little so I can squeeze another bike and run in per week. It basically means I have to double up my swim and run days.

So I beat my record and set a goal I planned on for this month. Funny thing is I set this goal last week!!  Apparently I'm not aiming high enough.  So what do you think?  Can I make 32:00 by months end?

I've really been slacking in the pool.  Looking at my blog it's been three weeks since I've been in the pool.  On that day I noted that I hadn't been in the pool for two weeks. So in the last 5 weeks I've only swam twice. It really doesn't seem possible but I do try and update after each workout. To make matters worse we have a time change coming up.  Im not a morning person and 6am is the only time i have available to swim so it will feel like 5am after the change.  I need to be trying hard to make these morning workouts cause all the triathlons are early and I'll need to be on the road by 5am to make the transition area before close.

So I definitely suffered a bit today. By the end of my workout my left arm didn't want to move. I never really felt comfortable and couldn't take in a clean breathe of air without taking in a drop or two ( this is absolute torture for me ). Bottom line I gotta start waking up.

The extra days of running, swimming, and biking are really helping out. I was 211 this morning my lowest weight to date. I am going to run a 5k this weekend to practice with raceway jitters for my tri coming up. Let you all know how it goes.

What's your plan for the weekend?

I'm going to downshift and taper for my 5k this weekend. I took my wife out for a nice 5 mile ride. She's had two knee surgeries this year so it was great to see her starting rehab. She did an awesome job, I'm very proud of her.

Good Luck....Oh sorry, I'm a little late...

Race: 00:00:00
Running MilesSwimming YardsBike Miles

I wrote the following Sunday but the race was Saturday so forgive the references to yesterday as I posted this in a couple of places.....

Well I ran my first 5k yesterday!  The race was VERY challenging for me. I have not practiced any hills since I've started running and as luck would have it there was nothing but hills!  The only flat place on the route was the parking lot we started and finished from.  I basically watched my HR and ran my race.

So this was a first annual race for this school. I'm guessing we had 50 runners. There was a nice layout of food and water. The race was up and down streets in a neighborhood and a full lap was 3.1 miles. The 10k runners ran the loop twice. There was a water station about a mile in and again it was very hilly. You would go up a hill for a few blocks and turn the corner and run down a hill for a few blocks and this continued the entire way till the final hill up to the finish.

These guys had a lot of issues. I'm not sure if anyone knew how to orchestrate such an event. It's Sunday night and I still don't have my times and unfortunately I did not keep one myself.  The worst part is I know I ran my best time ever but don't have anyway to know what that was.  At the awards ceremony they were giving out awards for the 10k people but some 5k runners were getting called for having won the 10k. Then the 5k winners were in the wrong order so they had to figure all that out on the stage. Maybe they will get it together next year.

In the end I learned a lot about a race and my race day jitters. That is the most valuable thing I'll take away from this besides practicing hills as part of my workout! If I get my time I'll post that.

Even if you never get your time you can still call it a PR of "FINISHED AND ALIVE"...:)

Did you ask for your entry fee back since they didn't get your time....Oh yeah...it was a fundraiser for a good cause...:)

Great ride today!  The weather was very nice for an evening ride. We did our 15 mile loop and I managed 15.86 mph which is .5 mph faster than my best. Also, the hill I find so challenging that I have had to stand and pump on, I was able to complete sitting down.  My knees are still bothering me but the pain is different and more of a tired muscle soreness than the sharp throbbing I had the last couple of days. I'm going to continue with my workouts unless something changes and the pain worsens.

So I'm back.  I had a pretty emotionally charged week last week and couldn't make any workouts.  I try really hard to stay away from drama but apparently if finds you.  I only have this to say to everyone.  Please people, if you suspect a child is being abused you have a legal and moral responsibility to report it.  Don't take sides, don't try and fix the problem, simply report it and let people more qualified than yourself deal with the issue.

So I ran tonight for the first time since last Monday.  I expected I would really struggle but my run was a healing experience and I enjoyed it very much.  It's probably not the safest thing in the world to run at night but I love it.  The air is cool, the stars are out, and everything is quiet and still.  My times weren't great but I went the furthest distance I've run to date.  Honestly, my knees and shins were my issue and definately not cardio.  I'm currently trying to keep all my workouts at 1 hour as it seems to be stimulating my weightloss.

One additional bit of news is that I finally got my times for the 5K from two weeks ago.  It appears I ran a 34:29 and averaged 11:12/mile.  This is big news because it is a PR and was in hills which I've never practiced on.  So I'm pleased.

Info on my run is below.

Sprained my ankle Sunday working on my pool.  Funny with all the miles stacking up it was stepping off my pool deck that led to a sprain.  I kept it easy and the ankle is healing up nicely.

Rode a really fast 20.  My fastest average to date 16.8 mph.  Ankle is still sore but manageable.  I did get into a wreck at the very end of my route.  I was on private property and met the ranch manager around a blind corner and we were both going fast.  I nearly became a hood ornament on a Chevy pickup.  We both had a good laugh.  No time to get unclipped.  So is life.

Good bike ride today.  Very challenging hills and the temp was pretty good.  I'm struggling a little with nutrition I think at the 2hr mark.  I'm going to have to do a little research on that.  I felt I was about to bonk at the end.  I'm taking Gu Gels every 45 minutes but it is not enough.  However, I only had 300 calories for the entire day prior to my ride this afternoon.  I'm going to have to do better than that.

12.5 Miles - 12.5mph

Well when I get off the wagon I get off hard.  I've managed to gain 20#'s in the last few months and for the most part haven't done a lick of work.  The good news is I'm not at square one but I'm pretty close.  When I stopped riding I was averaging near 17mph on a 30 mile ride in the hills.  Today you can see I did 12.5 average in all flats.  I'm going to ride the bike this week and walk on my off nights.  Next week I'll add back my running and try to get back to my 5k.  I'm also planning on adding some core workouts with my body weight (squats, pushups, crunches) to help me in all the events.  The big thing I'm going to be changing is my eating.  I'm going to be adding more fruits and nuts and low GI foods.  I'm using MyFitnessPal to track food intake and workouts which really helps me track intack.  It's been so hot here in Central Texas this summer that I couldn't even make myself go outside.  Excuses, Excuses, I know.

Got back on the bike today and added a few spinups and increased my distance to 1/2 my previous long distance.  Over the next three weeks I'm going to be adding 10% to each ride and working in spinup and powerup drills to these rides to get me back in shape for the Hill Country.  I'm taking a beating from the guys here at work that want me riding full distances tomorrow.  I'm going to play it safe and work my way up since I had so much trouble with my IT band earlier this year.

Word of advice to everyone. Taking 3 months off is not a good idea. I'm only 3 rides into my return to fitness and I'm pretty sure I've lost at least 3/4 of cardio/strength etc. If I could do it over again I would have suffered through the heat. It was 94 during my ride and it didn't feel bad as long as I kept moving.

Still not running miles just walking. I'll be kicking up the pace on Monday. I've been keeping up with my diet and staying under my calorie goals and eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts and only had red meat once this week. I've been rewarded with a little over 7#s of loss. We'll see what next week holds for us. Tomorrow I'll be riding an easy 15 with a friend who is also getting back to the bike after a long time off.

I've got a long way to go but if I keep my calorie intake to 1500 I should be back to where I was in about a month or so. I'm working to 1 goal and that is a 30 min 5k by the end of the year. I ran a 32 shortly before I stopped my program several months ago. I should be able to make it.

Walk day

4.5 miles - 3mph

I was supposed to bike yesterday but the heat was up about 105 so I decided against it so I took yesterday as a rest day. Today I stayed home with a sick kid and worked hard to stay under my calorie goal. I was doing great until I unknowingly consumed 600 calories worth of pistachios. Who would have known those things have that many calories. Anyway I tried to make it up on the treadmill. Tomorrow is my run day so I'll duplicate my Monday run. My weight has skyrocketed. This has happened to me a few times. I think it is a combination of water retention, muscle gain and my body adjusting to reduced calories. I think it thinks it needs to retain fat or something. Anyway, I'm not going to pay it much mind right now. Next week I'll be adding a morning walk for everyday plus my training ride or run in the evening this usually gets my metabolism rocking in short order.
